Just as Lincoln was able to bring together the American people to have a vision for a new America, so is Tim Burton able to do the same for Gotham City. Burton takes great pride in his past work, with live-action films like Edward Scissorhands, Mars Attacks, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sweeney Todd, Beetlejuice and Ed Wood. He loves to use the creative license he has as a filmmaker to re-imagine iconic characters in modern times, and so that is exactly what he does with Batman.
"Batman Returns" is an urban masterpiece that draws inspiration from many iconic elements from the Batman universe. The cityscape is as grotesque and heart-wrenching as any spooky circus ghost town of the past. The horror is housed in dark alleys and shadowy, dank graveyards. The Batsuit is both iconic and terrifying. Tim Burton is no stranger to blending his love of clowns with gothic design elements and great character actors. Robin Williams's performance as Harvey Dent is spot-on and his transformation scene is a visceral reminder that Bruce Wayne (Batman) is truly a shadow of the superhero he once was

The special effects and set design are both vivid and haunting. Burton brings to life the dark underbelly of the city with brilliant storytelling and incredible practical effects. The visual elements of the film are so evocative, they may make you feel as if you are experiencing a nightmare yourself.
The one flaw in "Batman Returns" is that Batman's motivation is still vague. He tells a girl that he is the "unmasked" Batsman because she has to know who the masked man really is, but he never goes into detail as to why he is doing it. The film feels like the "War of the Coprophages" of the Bat-universe, as Batman battles his arch-nemesis, the Penguin, whose sadistic history as an assassin borders on evil genius. No matter how much time you spend with the film, you cannot shake the feeling that a better villain could have been selected.
All in all, "Batman Returns" is an incredible return to form for Burton. "Batman Forever" takes on a toned down Batman, but "Batman Returns" is a great glimpse of the classic style that made the Batman so iconic in the first place. Tim Burton has made an iconic addition to the Batman saga that fans will enjoy for years to come.

Gotham City, 10 years ago. The Joker, Catwoman, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, Batman, Selina Kyle, Robin and more have descended upon a once proud city in their never-ending quest to turn the city into a violent, twisted hell.
The city's feared Commissioner James Gordon (Michael Keaton) is powerless to stop the nightmare, especially because the criminals all live together in the same island of topless women, the center of a giant strip club called Icabod Crane's, where they celebrate being the worst.
The worst!Suffice it to say, this is not a film that is designed to be enjoyable. Just as last summer's "Dark Knight Rises" takes on the weight of the whole "Dark Knight Trilogy," "Batman Returns" takes on a near-identical burden in trying to take the bat to the next level.
However, while "Dark Knight Rises" looked to be the culmination of Christopher Nolan's trilogy of films, "Batman Returns" lacks the emotional depth and conclusion of "Dark Knight." The film also runs slightly longer, clocking in at 133.
