Fortnite, which was released as a beta back in July 2017, is said to be the fastest selling free-to-play game of all time. The Epic Games-developed shooter game has raked in more than $3.4 billion in the past three months, Newzoo reported. The game has managed to grab 20 million daily active players across Android and iOS platforms. Fortnite is expected to have an even bigger boost with the release of Android mobile game-focused Android Gaming Service.
Close behind Fortnite is PUBG, which has sold more than 43.2 million copies in the past year. The title, which has also been downloaded by over 200 million people, is expected to reach 100 million active players before 2018 ends. The title is particularly popular in emerging markets like India and Southeast Asia, and is also available on iOS.
The third and fourth places in the top-10 list are occupied by GTA V and Asphalt 8: Airborne, which have sold more than 21.9 million and 21.4 million copies, respectively. Pokémon GO, which was a major force in 2017, failed to make the top-10 list.
"Fortnite appears to have broadened its appeal beyond its core gameplay," said Newzoo analyst Dan Warrington.
PUBG has sold the most copies on Android, followed by GTA V and GTA Online. Fortnite, however, is the second biggest mobile game in terms of revenue.
Among other mobile game developers, the top-five list includes Monster Strike, Clash of Clans, League of Legends and CrossFire. Here is the list of top ten best-selling games on Android in 2017, according to Newzoo:
Fortnite: 43.2 million copies Fortnite: 43.2 million copies PUBG: 43.2 million copies PUBG: 43.2 million copies GTA V: 21.9 million copies PUBG: 21.4 million copies Asphalt 8: Airborne: 21.4 million copies Pokémon GO: 20.5 million copies Clash of Clans: 16.8 million copies Monster Strike: 16.7 million copies League of Legends: 16.4 million copies CrossFire: 15.8 million copies
Meanwhile, Android developer Gameloft saw a 91 percent drop in daily active players during Q1 2018, the company's latest financial report revealed. According to the report, Gameloft had 782,000 active daily players in January 2018, compared to 2.4 million in December 2017. The news may have been caused by the game publisher's decision to reduce the amount of money spent per game, the firm said.
Gameloft was also on the losing side of a court case in Israel, after the Supreme Court upheld a ruling that would reduce the price of in-app purchases for games sold through the Google Play Store. The company called the ruling a "blatant attack" on free enterprise and the game industry.
Developers making games for iOS and other platforms, however, have been experiencing a similar situation in which gamers are spending more money in their games on iOS devices, which is driving up revenue for app developers. The drop in Gameloft's active players comes in the wake of the acquisition of the studio by Tencent, which has struggled with the issue of how to keep customers engaged on its platforms.
